Major league umpires are not always the crusty types you have come to know. Recently, Tom Rust had the opportunity to spend the morning with two of these great guys, Lance Barksdale and Ted Barrett as they visited the University of Chicago’s Comer Childrens Hospital. The visitation was part of a program called Blue for Kids. Tom helped as the umpires handed out Build-a-Bears to kids, some suffering from terminal illnesses. Think all major league umpires are old, crusty guys? Check out Ted Barrett and Rob Drake, two veteran major league umps, who have started a ministry called "Calling for Christ". Through retreats, on line Bible Studies, and encouragement, they are working with other umpires, mostly minor leaguers, to help them become spiritually grounded. Barrett is an ex-boxer with a seminary degree, and Drake is a Christian who writes a daily blog here. Face to Face is proud to be a partner ministry with these two men of God.
